Aging Your Crafts with Walnut Crystals
Walnut Crystal Aging Technique Sassafras Hill Primitives Walnut crystal solution is one of my favorite techniques to produce perfectly prim craft pieces. I use it on my hangtags and on some of my fabric pieces, especially when I am seeking a darker finish. As with many prim techniques, the best way to develop a look you are happy with is to practice, practice, practice. Walnut crystals are a concentrated powder like substance. They are mixed with warm water to create walnut ink, which is in turn used for staining. You may dilute it to create the color you like- very light sepia toned all the way to deep dark black/brown. If you keep your solution covered tightly when you are finished with it, it will keep well and be ready to use for several months. Start with 1/2 teaspoon to 1 cup warm water and mix very well. Let it sit for several minutes before using it. This will result in a medium color. You may vary the amounts (for example 1 teaspoon to 1/2 cup water produces a super dark finish). Spray onto your fabric using a spray bottle, or apply with a sponge brush. If staining tags, place them in a bowl of solution for a few minutes. Dry on paper towels in a 200 degree oven for just a few minutes, or air dry if you are blessed with patience... Some of the things I use it for are to spray onto my unfinished items after stuffing, and before painting them, or to brush over my finished items then dust with a tiny bit of cinnamon before sanding them. As with coffee or tea dyes, if using on washable items, it will fade somewhat. www.sassafrashill.com |
